Unlike constitutively expressed nitric oxide synthases, iNOS expression is induced in response to inflammatory stimuli such as interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α, and microbial products. iNOS is predominantly expressed in activated macrophages, dendritic cells, and other inflammatory cell types, where nitric oxide functions as an antimicrobial effector molecule and regulator of immune signaling. Detection of iNOS is widely used for characterization of inflammatory activation states, macrophage polarization, and immune responses in infection, cancer, and autoimmune disease.
