This receptor is expressed on NK cells, gamma delta T cells, some CD8+ T cells, basophils, and monocytes on most inbred mouse strains except C57BL\/6 and C58, which express the CD244.2 allotype. CD244 is a CD2-related receptor belonging to the SLAM family that exists as two different isoforms with opposing functions. CD244 associates with CD48, which is expressed widely on hematopoietic cells, regulates NK cell proliferation, cytotoxicity, and cytokine production. However, the CD244\/CD28 interaction between NK and other cell types inhibits NK cytotoxicity, which contributes to self-tolerance. Cell number should be determined empirically but can range from 10^5 to 10^8 cells\/test.
