CD62L is constitutively expressed on neutrophils, monocytes, and subsets of T, B, and NK cells, with notably reduced expression on a substantial population of memory T cells. CD62L mediates leukocyte rolling on activated endothelium and homing to the high endothelial venules (HEV) of peripheral lymphoid tissues through interaction with glycosylated, fucosylated, sulfated sialylated ligands including CD34, GlyCAM-1, and MAdCAM-1. CD62L undergoes rapid shedding from the cell surface upon leukocyte activation, making it a useful marker for distinguishing naïve from effector\/memory T cell subsets. The DREG56 clone was used by the HLDA workshop to establish the CD62L designation.
