CD73, also known as ecto-5’-nucleotidase, has an enzymatic activity to convert extracellular adenosine 5’-monophosphate (AMP) to adenosine. It is present in subsets of both T and B cells and is found at a high level on B cells. It is also expressed in mesenchymal stem cells, follicular dendritic cells, epithelial cells, and endothelial cells. CD73 is also a novel immune checkpoint associated with adenosine metabolism whose expression may promote tumor progression by suppressing antitumor immune response and promoting angiogenesis.
