Unlike conventional αβ T cell receptor, which recognizes peptides bound to MHC, γδ TCR recognizes antigens in a non-MHC restricted way. TCR γδ associates with CD3 to play a role in signal transduction and is found on thymocytes and a subset of T cells. γδ T-expressing T cells are often among the first immune cells to respond to infections and can rapidly produce cytokines to initiate an immune response.
