IgD is co-expressed with membrane IgM on the surface of mature naïve B cells, where both isotypes associate with the Igα\/Igβ (CD79a\/CD79b) signaling heterodimer to form the B cell antigen receptor (BCR) complex. Engagement of the IgD-BCR by antigen mediates signal transduction that fine-tunes B cell activation, selection, and tolerance, complementing rather than duplicating IgM-BCR signaling.
