This type I transmembrane glycoprotein is expressed on a variety of immune cell types, including thymocytes, T and B lymphocytes, and natural killer cells. Expression of CD229 is also detected on T and B cell malignancies, including Jurkat and Burkitt lymphoma cells, respectively. CD229 has been shown to interact with SH2-binding phosphatases and the adaptor proteins SLAM-associated protein (SAP) and EAT-2.
